Elizabeth C. Flanagan received her BA fromFairfieldUniversityinFairfield,Ct.Thereafter, she received her JD degree fromSetonHallLawSchoolwhere she was a member of Law Review. Upon graduation from law school, Mrs. Flanagan served as law clerk to the Honorable David D. Furman in both the Chancery (General Equity) and Appellate Divisions of the Superior Court of New Jersey. She is admitted to practice in the bars of the State ofNew Jersey, the United States District Court for the State ofNew Jerseyand the United States Supreme Court.

After concluding her clerkship with Judge Furman, Elizabeth Flanagan worked for many years at two of the country's leading law firms, Pitney Hardin (now, Day Pitney) and Shanley & Fisher (now, Drinker Biddle). At Pitney and Shanley, Betsy, a commercial litigator, developed an expertise representing insurance and reinsurance companies and financial institutions in litigation and litigation avoidance.   She is widely recognized as an expert in title insurance litigation, general insurance advice and coverage litigation and issues involving financial institutions. She has initiated and defended major cases on behalf of her clients, including multi-party and class action lawsuits. In that capacity, she has represented major insurance companies and their insureds in some of the most significant litigation in the State and has advised them in coverage actions throughout the country. Betsy and her talented and highly experienced team also provide claims handling, audit and investigative services.

In order to gain first-hand, in-house insurance experience, Mrs. Betsy Flanagan accepted a position at Chubb where for several years she supervised and retained outside counsel to work on complex antitrust, securities, financial institution, directors and officers and employment claims, including class actions and shareholder derivative suits, stemming from primary and excess specialty insurance products. During her time at Chubb, Betsy issued coverage opinions, set reserves, analyzed law firm billings and negotiated settlements of major claims throughout the country in state and federal courts. She also worked with Chubb underwriters to present seminars and educate corporate insureds and Chubb's agents as to the scope of coverage afforded by various specialty products.

After working at Chubb, Betsy decided to combine her extensive experience and return to the practice of law where she is committed to providing the same excellent legal services at rates more reasonable than those charged at the larger firms. She joined the Purcell firm as a Partner and spearheads the litigation, appellate, title insurance and insurance coverage departments. At Purcell, the hallmarks of Betsy's practice have endured: responsiveness, reasonableness and superlative results.
